8 New Players Join 20 Returners at Largest-Ever GW Tryout

The 2015-16 Colonials are set to go after completing their largest ever tryouts this past Tuesday.  From that group, team leadership has selected 5 goalies, 8 defensemen, and 15 forwards to fill out the roster.

In goal, last year's four returning goaltenders - Dylan Cleary, Corey Nadell, Neil Hershman, and Sam Evans - are joined by newcomer Alec Astorga, who previously played at the Canterbury School.  Cleary and Astorga are primed to be an exciting 1-2 punch in net, and the GW net has never been more secure with Nadell, Hershman, and Evans as support.

The Colonials have returned 5 defensemen including ACCHL All-Star Austin Fruchter along with seniors Sam Powers and Matt Whiffen and sophomores Zack Smolev and John Grogan.  Alex Katsihtis, who took a year off to play Junior A in Michigan (Kalkaska Rhinos), also returns for his 2nd campaign.  They are joined by newcomers Logan Gentile (Carmel HS Varsity) and Nikita Zlatopolsky (Atlanta Fire AAA) who look to contribute immediately on the blue line.  These younger additions mean GW is not only deep at defense this season, but for years to come.

The offense will once again be anchored by ACCHL All-Stars Max Terhar and Jake Lessick, and moving up to center them will be Alec Weinberg, who joined the team late last season and had 2 goals in GW's first-round playoff exit.  They are joined by returning players Ricky Cyr, Tommy O'Connor, Chris Perugini, Nick Ryan, and Connor Varley.  The ever-adaptable Chris Boyes will be joining the forward corps after two years at D.  They are all joined by grad students Ryan Ferizovic (Streetsville Derbys Jr A) and Kevin Zhang (UC San Diego), senior-newcomer Sam Finkler (NJ Avalanche AA/Wayne Hills HS Varsity), and freshman Brian Sargent (Andover HS Varsity).  Rounding out the offense - for the first time ever - is a set of brothers: returning-senior Luke Yerkovich and freshman Will Yerkovich - both formerly of the Nichols School.

Max Terhar will once again wear the "C" for GW, and he is joined by Jake Lessick and Ricky Cyr who will wear the A's.  Backed by 17 returners and some very capable new players. they look to lead the team back to the ACCHL playoffs and hopefully for their deepest run yet.

The Colonials players and staff would like to thank all of the players who came out to tryouts and would encourage those who did not make the team to stay in touch as spots may open up throughout the year.  In addition, any players who did not make it to tryouts and are interested in playing should contact the team at as we are always on the hunt for top talent.
