This past weekend, GW took part in the 2nd Annual Stephen Russel Memorial Tournament organized by the ACCHL. Each year GW begins their in-conference schedule for the year at this tournament with three games against teams from North Carolina.
On Friday, GW faced Elon. The game was tied 2-2 going into the third period, and despite GW jumping out to a 4-2 lead late in the third, Elon managed to score with 3 minutes and 1 minute left to tie the game up. No one scored in the OT period, and so the game ended in a tie.
On Saturday morning, GW participated in the tournament's skills competition and all-star game. Luke Yerkovich, Will Yerkovich, Nick Ryan, and Austin Fruchter participated in the skills relay, but were unfortunately disqualified when they accidentally cut the course on the last leg. Kevin Zhang took part in the fastest skater competition and lost a close heat to Georgetown's skater. His time of 16.75 seconds would be good for fifth place. Once again, Jake Lessick took part in the accurate shot competition, but unfortunately missed the mark on all four of his shots. Max Terhar took on the hardest shot competition and came away with the win again with a speed of 85mph. Finally Dylan Cleary participated in the shootout, ceding only 2 goals on 7 shots, but it wasn't enough to get him into the final round. John Moynihan led the North All-Stars featuring GW's Luke Yerkovich, Will Yerkovich, and Nick Ryan, but unfortunately they fell to the South All-Stars 5-0.
Saturday night, tournament play resumed with GW taking on Wake Forest. Penalty trouble early in the game put GW into a 2-0 hole, but they would manage to get one back before the end of the first to only be down 2-1. Teams exchanged goals in the second, but GW couldn't close the gap and were down 4-3 going into the third. Finally in the third period, goals by Nick Ryan and Max Terhar would give GW their first lead of the game. Late in the third period, GW was assessed two penalties off a scrum in front of the net, but they managed to kill the 5-on-3 to hold on for the close win. Freshman goalie Alec Astorga got his first league win.
Finally, on Sunday morning, GW faced defending ACC-Champions UNC. GW would go down 1-0 in the first, but an explosion of three goals in the second period by Luke Yerkovich, Nick Ryan, and Ryan Ferizovic would give GW the 3-1 lead going into the third. GW would add to the lead in the third, finishing the game 5-2. Dylan Cleary got the win in net.
With a 2-0-1 record, GW finds themselves in first place of the North Division which consists of themselves, Georgetown, Navy, and St. Joe's. GW gets back at it this Friday, October 16th, with a Revolutionary Rivalry matchup with George Mason for Colonials Weekend! The game will start at 6:40pm at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.
