GW Beats Revolutionary Rival George Mason in Come-from-Behind Win

Last Friday, in a rare prime-time home game, GW faced off against Revolutionary Rival George Mason University for their Colonials Weekend matchup.

Maybe it was the earlier start, or maybe it was the 8 minor penalties, but the first half of the game did not go GW's way at all.  By the 10 minute mark of the second period, they found themselves down 6-2.  A timeout and goalie change by Coach Moynihan seemed to spark the team for the second half.  Two power play goals from Ricky Cyr and Alex Katsihtis, and an even strength goal by Zack Smolev, had GW within 1 going into the third period.

Within 5 minutes into the third period, Chris Perugini would tie the game.  The tie would continue until after the midway point in the period when consecutive goals from Jake Lessick, Nick Ryan, and Ricky Cyr in the middle part of the period would give GW a commanding 9-6 lead.  The teams would trade goals late in the game, giving GW the 10-7 win.  Freshman goalie Alec Astorga got the win in net, giving up only 1 goal in his half of the game.

GW is back to late night hockey this coming Friday as they play their first league-home-game against new ACCHL member Saint Joe's.  The game begins at 11pm at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.
