On Saturday, GW got the semester off to a great start with a 6-4 win over new ACCHL member, and first-time opponent, James Madison.
It took a little while for both teams to get going after the long winter's break, but once JMU opened the scoring at the 7:32 mark of the first period, it took off. Senior forward Luke Yerkovich responded two minutes later with GW's first of the game, and they took a 1-1 tie into the 1st intermission.
GW got right back at it in the second period with goals from junior forward Jake Lessick 3 minutes in, sophomore forward Tommy O'Conner 8 minutes in, and sophomore defenseman Austin Fruchter 10 minutes in to give GW a 4-1 lead. JMU would respond with a quick goal of their own, but before the end of the second Lessick would get his 2nd of the game to give GW a 5-2 lead going in to the third.
Early in the third, GW had a string of penalties that eventually cost them when JMU got a power play goal at the 16 minute mark, and then JMU added an even-strength tally halfway through the period to make it a one-goal game. JMU continued to plug away, and late in the third they appeared to have tied the game up, but the goal was called back for a dislodged net. After that, it was JMU's turn to take a string of penalties, and senior forward Nick Ryan picked up a rebound off a point shot by sophomore defenseman Zack Smolev and put it in the net with just under three minutes to go to ice the game 6-4 for GW.
Senior goalie Dylan Cleary stopped 28 of 32 shots for the win, GW had 44 shots in the game.
After the game, the 3rd Annual GW Hockey Alumni Classic took place where Team Hobert (classes '01, '14, & '15) fell to Team Schliftman (classes '05 to '12) 11-4. Special thanks to Taylor Gourmet for providing excellent food and the GW Alumni Association for providing the ice as well as grad student forward Kevin Zhang for volunteer reffing.
GW's next game was scheduled to be this coming Saturday, January 23rd at Navy, but due to the weather will likely be rescheduled. Stay tuned for updates on that. GW will then be back in action the following weekend with exhibition games against Georgetown (January 29th @ Laurel) and Johns Hopkins (January 30th @ Kettler). January 30th will be our "Senior Night" as it is our last Kettler Home game of the season.
