Last weekend, GW headed out to Charlottesville to take on the University of Virginia in a non-league game and James Madison University in a league matchup. Although GW always looks forward to matchups with UVA, all eyes would be on Saturday's match with JMU as it was GW's chance to lock up the Capital Division and secure the 3rd seed for playoffs.
On Friday, GW faced UVA for the first time this season. GW jumped out to a 2-0 lead relatively early on two goals from senior forward Max Terhar. In the second period it was UVA's turn as they scored 3 unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead into the third. UVA and GW would exchange goals in the third, with GW's coming on the power play from sophomore defenseman Alex Katsihtis, but they'd never tie the game up falling 4-3.
On Saturday against JMU, with a possible playoff spot clinch on the line, GW once again jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, and once again it was senior forward Max Terhar who opened up the scoring. GW's other first period goal came from senior forward Luke Yerkovich. However, history began repeating itself as JMU would score three unanswered goals, two in the 2nd and one to open the third. Tonight would be different however as they would go on to score three unanswered goals - a snipe by senior forward Jake Lessick, another power play goal from Yerkovich, and a hard work empty-net goal by grad student forward Kevin Zhang to cap off the 5-3 win. Senior goalie Dylan Cleary had the win in net.
With the win, GW clinched the Capitol Division, which will give them the third seed going in to playoffs - setting up a first round matchup with Duke University who GW has not played this season. Playoffs will take place February 19-21 at Main Street Arena in Charlottesville. GW's first game on Friday night against Duke is currently scheduled for 9:30pm. The rest of the playoff matchups are as follows:
However, the regular season isn't over yet: the game at Navy which was cancelled due to the snow storm has been resceduled for this Thursday at 10:00pm in Annapolis, and then GW takes on UVA at Prince William Ice Arena to close the regular season on Saturday at 4:10pm.
