GW Heads to Stephen Russel Tournament to Begin Conference Play After Wins over Hopkins and Loss to Army

GW got the defense of their ACCHL championship underway the best way possible - a dominant defeat over a regional rival.  On Friday, September 23rd, GW kicked off the season in Baltimore against Johns Hopkins University - whom GW battled twice the previous season to 1-goal victories.  This time would not be so close as GW cruised to a 13-4 win over an understaffed Hopkins squad.  Junior Tommy O'Connor and Senior Jake Lessick got the scoring off to a quick start, but then GW would actually be held without another goal until the end of the period when Lessick would give GW a 3-1 lead.  To start the second period, GW and Hopkins traded goals to make it 5-3 - with Lessick finishing off the hattrick and junior Zac Smolev netting his first of the year.  After that, the floodgates opened for GW with 5 more goals before the period ended by sophomore Brian Sargent, grad student Kevin Zhang (2), and another goal each for O'Connor and Lessick - giving GW a 10-3 lead going into the third.  O'Connor would finish his hattrick to start the third, and after another Hopkins goal, Lessick and sophomore Logan Gentile would add goals for GW to finish the game 13-4.  Junior Corey Nadell got the win in net.

The next night, GW would face a much tougher opponent with the Army team making the trip down from West Point.  Army would open the scoring just 5 minutes into the game, and then add another with about 5 left in the period, but GW would not go into the locker room empty-handed with a goal from Sargent to end the period down just 2-1.  The teams would trade goals around the mid-point of the second period with GW's goal coming from sophomore Will Yerkovich making it a 3-2 game going into the third.  The third period started with a flurry of goals in the first 7 minutes - 3 for Army and one for GW from Zhang.  A late goal by Sargent would cut Army's lead to 2, but that's as close as it got as Army held on to defeat GW 6-4. Sophomore Alec Astorga got the loss in net.

The next weekend, it would be Hopkins' turn to travel down the parkway to DC to take on GW at Kettler.  GW scored early and often in this game, with goals from Sargent (2), junior Alex Katsihtis (2), W. Yerkovich, Lessick (2), freshman Joey Frongillo, and most impressively 5 goals by junior Alex Weinberg in his season debut.  Astorga (2 period) and junior Ben Berner (1 period) would split the win in net.

With preseason behind them, GW is off to Raleigh, North Carolina from October 7-9 to the annual ACCHL Stephen Russel Memorial Tournament.  There, GW will face three NC opponents in games that will all count in the ACCHL standings:

F, 10/7 - vs. Duke - Raleigh Center Ice - 9:00pm
S, 10/8 - vs. NC State - Raleigh Iceplex - 6:00pm
