Colonials Drop OT Game to UVA, Bounce Back with Win over JMU

This past weekend, GW traveled down to Charlottesville to take on UVA and JMU in two non-league games.  On Friday night, GW took the fight to UVA, dominating the first period on goals by freshman forward Alec Yerkovich and sophomore forward Brian Sargent to take a 2-0 lead into the dressing room after the first.  GW would keep things going early in the second, building a 3-0 lead off a goal by junior defenseman Alex Katsihtis.  However, at the midway point of the period, UVA joined the game in earnest potting two goals of their own - cutting the lead to 3-2 going into the third.  In the third, UVA and GW would alternate scoring with both of GW's goals coming from grad student forward Kevin Zhang.  And with one minute to go, UVA would tie the game at 5-5.  It wouldn't take long for the teams to settle the game in OT as UVA scored just 25 seconds into the extra stanza to take the 6-5 OT win.

The next night, GW would once again come out of the gate flying with two goals, one from senior forward Jake Lessick and another by Zhang.  JMU wouldn't wait until the 2nd period to respond, and instead put in 3 goals before the end of the first sending the Colonials to the locker room down 3-2.  Junior defenseman Austin Fruchter would tie the game early in the third, but JMU would respond quickly.  GW finished the period strong on goals by junior forward Alec Weinberg and another by Lessick to take a 5-4 lead into the third.  Sophomore forward Will Yerkovich would get one in the third, and thanks to one final goal by JMU it would stand as the game winner.  Sophomore goalie Alec Astorga made 30 saves in the winning effort.

Next week, GW takes on Navy for the second time.  After clinching the Atlantic division again, GW will need to win out if they want a chance at the first or second seed in playoffs.
