It took GW a few periods to find their feet this past weekend, and unfortunately it was too little too late for their home opener versus George Mason, but it paid dividends the next night versus the College of New Jersey.
On Friday night, a tentative start by GW somehow managed to keep pace with an aggressive George Mason team, whose three goals would outpace GW's two from senior forward Brian Sargent and junior forward Alec Yerkovich. In the second period, GW still couldn't get into a rhythm as they were sent to the box nine times. However, they dug deep and weathered the essentially period-long penalty kill to only be down 4-2 going into the final frame. Despite finding their legs and even getting a few powerplays themselves, only Mason would get a goal in the third giving GW a 5-2 loss to start the season.
The next night, GW kept the momentum going and burst out of the gate for a 5-goal first period against the College of New Jersey, with goals coming from Sargent (2), freshman forward Cooper May, senior forward Will Yerkovich, and freshman forward Grey Harral. GW would face another penalty-laden second period, this time only five penalties, but they would cede two goals to make it a 5-2 game going into the third. Halfway through the final stanza, Harral would net his second of the night to ice the 6-2 victory for GW. Corey Nadell would get the win in net with 34 saves on 36 shots.
GW's next outing is a doozy - an exhibition against Georgetown University at the Capital One Arena following the Capitals-Hurricanes preseason game on Friday, September 28th. Fans who want to attend the GW-Georgetown game MUST purchase a ticket to the Caps-Canes game (which can be purchased very cheaply) and be in the building by the end of the NHL game. GW will take the ice immediately following. More information can be found on our Facebook event page for the game.
