GW began the 2015-2016 campaign in spectacular fashion beating local opponent Catholic University 19-2 on Friday and 10-1 on Saturday.
On Friday, in front of an almost 200 person crowd at Kettler Capitals Iceplex, GW and Catholic played a pretty even game until Max Terhar potted his first goal of the season on the PP about a third of the way into the first period, and after that the floodgates opened. GW would go on to score 4 more in the first and then another 14 goals the rest of the game. The power play went 6 for 8, and Dylan Cleary got the win in net turning away 27 of the 29 shots he faced.
On Saturday at Fort Dupont, the game was even through the first 10 minutes until once again, a GW power play led to their opening salvo, this time by Alex Katsihtis. GW would go on to score another 9 goals while only ceding 1, winning the game 10-1. Freshman goalie Alec Astorga got his first-ever GW win by turning away 11 of 12 shots.
With so much scoring a number of new GW players recorded their first goals of their careers: Will Yerkovich, Kevin Zhang, Logan Gentile, and Sam Finkler. In total, 13 different players combined for 29 goals.
GW faces a much tougher test this upcoming weekend as Holy Cross will visit DC for the first time to face GW on Friday at 11pm at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. On Saturday, GW will meet up with ACCHL opponent Elon for a non-league game at 930pm at Prince William Ice Center.
